Procedural Memory

I mentioned a while back that I was currently looking for a new job. I recently applied for a particular position that I will tell you more about once the interview process is completed. In the process of this search I have decided to learn how to type properly so as to become more efficient at something I do and will need to do more in the future. Up till now all I do is hunt and peck at a blazing 25 wpm.

This process takes a lot of patience. In fact I am writing this post while trying to follow proper technique. I’m not going to tell you how long it is taking. The reason it is difficult is because my mind and muscles are learning something new. They are trying to add a new process to my “Procedural Memory”. What this basically means is that my mind is trying to get my body to start typing properly instinctively instead of having to consciously think about doing it the right way.

Our spiritual development works the same way only one of the players has changed. My spirit is tying to get my flesh to do the right thing instinctively, even though it is against my flesh’s natural instincts. Unlike my mind with typing, my spirit has reinforcements. The Holy Spirit is always there to give guidance and strength in this sometimes very difficult process. With His help many new Christ-like attributes become not just second nature but first nature. The Bible says it this way:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2

Reprogramming your mind is hard, I started this post last night, but it’s worth it. Learning how to do things the right way with less of a struggle just makes sense.
