Help me stop wasting time…

Have I ever mentioned how hard it is to properly schedule my time to get everything done? I am slowly learning to do this properly but I still hit a few bumps along the way. As bi-vocational church planter my time is in extremely short supply so making the most of it is crucial. As many of you know I work a job that takes about 50 hours of my weekdays, this really only leaves my evenings and weekends for absolutely everything else. This is one of the reasons that had led me to become sleep deprived. In fact it is easy to think that sleep should suffer in order to get everything done when sleeping hours are the only time that no one else wants your attention. As I pointed out in that post, neglecting your need for rest not only harms your health but it hinders your creativity and focus. That is why it is crucial to manage your time well.

Today I am putting a schedule into place that will help me manage my time better and give me the opportunity to do all the things that I need to get done. People who read this are going to either one of two responses and I realize this. They are either going to say that I am doing too much and that I need to slow down or that I need to keep pressing on and God will make a way. To the first I say, why don’t you help me then? I am more than happy to have assistance. To the second I say, thank you for the word of encouragement, I am counting on that very fact. So here is how I have chosen to segment my weeknights until something happens that causes me to reevaluate it.

MONDAY – Focus: Leaders & Vision

5:30 – 6:30: Exercise. This is usually at the gym but every once in awhile I let Kevin talk me into playing some basketball.

6:30 – 8:00: Meeting. I spend this time with my other leaders, usually at our McDonalds office. We discuss what we accomplished in the past week, what needs done in the next and the over-arching vision.

8:00 – 10:00: Work & Relax. Strangely some of my work can be very relaxing for me but I also use this time to catch up with Angela on the day and such.

10:00 – 10:30: Time with God.

TUESDAY – Focus: Music & Vision

5:30 – 6:30: Practice Preparation. Leading the band is not my gift and most definitely is not a skill of mine so it takes me a little prep time to get focused.

6:30 – 8:00: Band Practice. It is what it is.

8:00 – 10:00: Work & Relax.

10:00 – 10:30: Time with God.

WEDNESDAY – Focus: Message & Vision

5:30 – 6:30: Exercise.

6:30 – 8:00: Study, research and meditate.

8:00 – 10:00: Work & Relax.

10:00 – 10:30: Time with God.

THURSDAY – Focus: People & Vision

5:30 – 6:30: Meeting. Scheduled meeting with someone who made a request or that I need to speak with.

6:30 – 7:30: Exercise.

7:30 – 9:00: Meeting. Scheduled meeting with someone who made a request or that I need to speak with.

9:00 – 10:00: Work & Relax.

10:00 – 10:30: Time with God.

FRIDAY – Focus: Wife

5:30 – 6:30: Exercise.

6:30 – 7:00: Get Ready 😉

7:00 – 10:00: Date Night

10:00 – 10:30: Time with God.

10:30 – ?: More time with wife.

Other than specific church events like Sunday service, I spend this time with my wife as well. This is sometimes fun stuff and sometimes chores but it is always about family and friends.

So there you have it, the way I will now be spending my weeknights. I have some other things that I want to do in the future and I will have to adjust my schedule when that time comes. The point is that many times we have a lot on our plate and if we don’t fill up our schedule, someone else will.

What are some ways you protect your schedule? What is some advice you would offer me, a bi-vocational church planter? I don’t have all the answers, just a lot of opinions. That’s one of the reasons I blog. 😉
